A 19-year-old man has been arrested after he was allegedly found with knives and tactical equipment at a museum north of Sydney.

Police said they received a welfare report about the man about 12.30pm today.

Officers stormed the Newcastle Museum on Workshop Way in Newcastle, where they arrested him.

A search led police to find and seize items, including knives and tactical gear.

“Following further inquiries officers became aware of the existence of a document that had been circulated to a number of public figures and media outlets,” police alleged. 

The teen is at Newcastle Police Station. 

“The male is currently assisting police and there is no ongoing threat to the community relating to this investigation,” police said.

It is understood the teen had briefly visited the office of Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp.

“I understand that there was an incident in Newcastle today. I have spoken with police and they are managing the situation and have assured me that nobody was harmed,” he said.”

“I have been advised that the individual briefly walked in and out of my office, he left before making any contact with my staff.”
