A much-loved Melbourne teacher and former principal is being mourned after falling through the roof of a school building.

Paul Hogan, a relief teacher at St Margaret Mary’s Primary School in Spotswood in the inner-west, was involved in a freak accident on Thursday.

The 61-year-old was helping retrieve balls from the roof of one of the buildings when he fell through a skylight, dropping more than three metres to the ground.

Tributes have been pouring in for the teacher, who devoted his life to Catholic education over a career spanning 36 years.

“We extend our sincere condolences to Paul’s family, friends and colleagues, and we hold all of those impacted in our hearts and prayers,” Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools executive director Dr Edward Simons wrote.

“Paul was a friend and a mentor to many in our community, and he will be dearly missed.”

WorkSafe Victoria confirmed it was investigating the incident.
