A much-loved “gorilla” will return to its natural habitat after it was stolen in Melbourne’s north-east last month.

The 1.5-metre statue, dubbed “Garry”, was nicked from a retirement community on St Helena Road, St Helena, at about 4pm on June 6.

Police carried out an extensive investigation, finally focusing on a residence of interest in Reservoir.

The Air Wing was called in, and spotted a lonesome Garry tucked away in a backyard.

Police carried out a search warrant at a home on Monday and recovered the adored ape.

Officers will take Garry back to his rightful home this afternoon.

The investigation to the theft is ongoing. Anybody with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or online.
