A monster fire that tore through three homes in Brisbane has left three people in hospital, including two firefighters.

Residents of Evelyn Street at The Grange were on edge for hours as the flames spread and crews battled to save neighbouring properties

The source of the blaze, which was tackled by 40 firefighters, is believed to be a fuel spill.

“Someone was filling up a vehicle, (the fuel) has ignited on the ground,” firefighter Douglas May said.

Home owner David Topp told 9News Brisbane he received “frantic calls” from friends this afternoon.

“We’ve just literally arrived home now [and] our house is looking like it’s going to go up in flames,” he said.

“We’ve got three cats in there, they can’t be replaced, possessions can.”

Pets from at-risk homes were taken in by neighbours further down the street.

Several crews remain on the scene tonight and continue to douse homes from the air with water.

The fire department has asked residents in neighbouring streets to keep their windows and doors closed.
