Cartoon Network has confirmed reports of its death as not just greatly exaggerated but false, following a trending hashtag #RIPCartoonNetwork on social media.
That resulted in an outpouring from nostalgic, mostly adult, fans who grew up with many of its titles.
“We appreciate the love and nostalgia our fans have for Cartoon Network. While the industry is indeed facing significant challenges, we remain committed to bringing joy and entertainment to our audience,” a statement read.
The trend began when Animation Workers Ignited posted a montage video highlighting the challenges faced by the animation industry amid widespread layoffs.
“Cartoon Network is dead?!?! Spread the word about what’s at stake for animation!!! Post about your favorite Cartoon Network shows using #RIPCartoonNetwork. Active members of TAG can help by filling out your survey! Today is the last day,” read the message from Animation Workers Ignited.
A video, which quickly went viral, noted many US animation workers are now unemployed, despite their crucial role during the pandemic when animation production continued, and urged followers to post their favourite Cartoon Network shows using #RIPCartoonNetwork.
Despite the statement that’s not to say the network doesn’t have any problems.
It, and Warner’s other properties, have been in a general malaise since the merger with Discovery. Amid plummeting shares, CEO David Zaslav continues to make unpopular decisions. Additionally, the conglomerate’s reputation is in decline as consumers frown upon unpopular moves like renaming HBO Max to Max, removing content from the streaming service, cancelling content for write-offs, and more.
Despite these setbacks, other adjustments by Cartoon Network stateside have been well received, such as starting Adult Swim two hours earlier each night. New programming is also in the works. The Amazing World of Gumball: The Series premieres this year, and spin-offs of Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Foster’s Home for Imaginary People are in development.
In Australia, WBD-owned Cartoon Network, which screens on Foxtel / Binge, is continuing to premiere new content including Cartoonito: Playdate (now screening in July) and Mischief Masters (Saturday, 13 July).
