Fourteen students at a Japanese high school have been taken to hospital after eating “super spicy” potato chips, local authorities have reported.

One student in their first year at Rokugo Koka High School in Tokyo brought the packet of chips, which are labelled ’18+ curry chips’, to school.

Around 30 students ate the extremely spicy chips, police reported to local media.

An emergency call was made at 12.40pm local time on Tuesday after the students complained of nausea, stomach cramps and mouth pain.

One boy and 13 girls, all first-year students, were taken to hospital with mild symptoms.

The company that manufactures the chips, Isoyama Corp, has released a statement saying it “sincerely wishes for the swift recovery of those who have reported feeling unwell”.

On its website, Isoyama Corp “forbids” those aged under 18 from eating the chips and urges spice lovers to consume them with caution.

Videos posted online appear to show some of the students after eating the chips crying out in pain.
