A man has been shot during an alleged attempted carjacking in Melbourne’s south-east in broad daylight.

The 33-year-old man had allegedly just parked his car on Newton Drive, Cranbourne North about 2.45pm yesterday when he was approached by a stranger.

The man allegedly demanded the victim’s car keys pulling out a gun when he refused to hand them over, Victoria Police said.

“A scuffle ensured and the victim suffered gunshot injuries to the lower body,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The offender fled.

The victim, who is from Point Cook, was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives are investigating if the matter was linked to any other incidents in the area.

Neighbour Hansel Casperz told 9News he “heard a couple of different shots” while washing his car.

He said he thought it had been a car backfiring until a man approached him and said he had been shot.

Caspersz said the man, who is the partner of someone who lives in the street, appeared to have been shot in the hip and the buttocks.

“He was in a lot of pain,” he said.
