Two people have been taken to hospital and a chunk of the M1 Pacific Motorway is closed northbound after a five-vehicle crash north of Sydney.

The vehicles collided about 6.05pm at Berowra, about 30 kilometres north of Sydney, and the motorway remained closed late into the night, causing major delays for those heading back to the Central Coast.

A man driving a blue sedan was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition. Paramedics were able to treat a woman in a black sedan at the scene before she was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
