Tonight on Better Homes & Gardens Joh meets fish butcher Josh Niland and Melissa discovers worm farming.
Johanna – The Fish Butchery
Josh Niland is a fish butcher who knows how to use every bit of the fish in efficient, creative and very inventive ways that you would never expect. His approach to cooking has made him one of the most talked about and award-winning chefs in Australia right now, not to mention earning a spot in the list of top 100 restaurants in the world for his restaurant, Saint Peter. Joh catches up with Josh to talk about his journey to gastronomic excellence and his philosophy of using the whole fish, from scale to tail. But if all that sounds a bit fancy, Josh also knows how to keep it simple as well, giving you the secret to cooking the perfect grilled fish.
Adam – Kitchen 1%ers. Attention to Detail
In sporting vernacular, one-percenters are the little things players do that may not be noticed but add up to help the team win. Adam’s DIY version is fixing those odd jobs in the kitchen that don’t make a big difference on their own but add up to having a more functional and enjoyable space. From creating more storage in the cupboard around your extractor fan, to replacing the silicon join along your benchtop and hiding your unsightly bin away inside a cabinet. Once done these “one-percenters” will make your day-to-day life that little bit better.
Colin – Spiced Mandarin Glazed Pork
Colin’s all-time favourite meat to cook is a pork fillet, because you can cook it in a variety of ways, it’s fast, and of course, it’s delicious. Mandarins are a match made in heaven for pork, so Colin will show you how to make a sweet and aromatic glaze to go on your succulent pork fillets. Cooked with colourful seasonal vegetables, this is going to be your new favourite winter warmer.
Graham – Plant Winners For Every Spot
If you’re after some inspiration for your backyard, nothing beats a wander around a nearby botanic garden. Not only are they home to hundreds of amazing plant varieties, but it’s a good way to find out what will grow well in your local climate. Graham’s visiting The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Mount Tomah to check out the seasonal highlights and to share plenty of plant picks for your garden along the way.
Charlie – Federation Garden
Charlie’s rejuvenating the front yard of a federation era home that has a beautiful front porch featuring tessellated tiles. So, he’s going to complement those with a traditional formal garden and has great tips for choosing the right plants, materials and creating a solid base when working with sandstone. This classic old home will now have the classic new garden it deserves.
Melissa – Worm Farming
Got worms? Melissa thinks you should. Worm farming, also known as vermicomposting, is a home-gardener friendly means of using worms to produce your own garden fertiliser. Worm farms reduce your waste by eating your food scraps, so they make a great urban farming solution. Once your farm is in operation, you’ll never have to pay for fertiliser again!
Juliet – Macrame Jewellery
Macrame has made a comeback in a major way, and you can use the technique on everything from accessories to home decor! With just a few simple materials, you can create a chic, boho pair of earrings that look like they came from a boutique, but you’ll be able to say that you made with your own two hands. Juliet will show how to make a few variations of earrings that are so simple you will not only want to make them for yourself but give them as gifts to friends as well.
Juliet – The Shaving Cream Card
Getting the kids involved in making a gift card is not only fun but can create lasting memories that will be treasured for years. You might not think shaving cream as a way to decorate a card, but you’ll be amazed with the results. It’s a little bit like baking a cake, but so much more fun!
Dr Harry – Bulldozing Boxer
Meet Rudy, an 8-month-old boisterous boxer! While his family took 18 months to complete a home renovation, he’s only taken a couple of months to do a reno of his own in the backyard. He loves to pull plants out of pots, dig very deep holes and generally create a demolition site. Of course, this all happens when the family isn’t home so it’s hard for them to police. Can Dr Harry stop this bulldozing boxer in his tracks.
