A man with a disability has fended off armed intruders with a cane after they broke into his Queensland home.
Andrew DeMiles-Stanstiuc was about to fall asleep when his door flew open and three people confronted him just after 2am yesterday.
The 57-year-old, who lives with a brain injury and Parkinson’s Disease, picked up his walking aid and stood up.

He told the intruders “you boys are in a lot of trouble and one of you is going to be really hurt”.
Their weapons were no match for his aluminum cane, which he used in self-defence to successfully drive them from the Redbank Plains home.
“They just ran out the front door,” he told 9News Queensland.
“No matter how bad you hurt, you get up, you keep going, you stand up.

“You keep putting one in for the team and in this case, the team is my household.”
His niece Emily Gale was awake at the time of the home invasion.
“I just heard my uncle scream out ‘we’re being attacked, we’re being attacked’,” Gale said.
“I’ll probably be awake for the next two to three nights to make sure my uncle’s ok.”

His housemate Paige Coughlin praised him for his bravery despite being “very sick”.
“He was very, very brave for doing that and protecting everybody in the house,” she said.
The 57-year-old suspects the intruders were after his prescription pain medication.
“There’s things you just don’t do in normal society and that’s one of them,” he said.
