Legendary cycling commentator, Phil Liggett, has announced he has called his last Olympic Games during an interview with Eddie McGuire.
Known affectionately as the ‘Voice of Cycling’ Liggett has been a mainstay of Olympic cycling commentary, with Paris being his 17th Games.
Liggett – who turns 81 the same day as the Closing Ceremony – called his final Olympic event Sunday in Paris with the Women’s Road Race.
“Another four years from now, I’ll be 85,” he said.
“And I think that’s too old to spoil the viewers’ fun. But boy, I’ll miss it.”
But retirement isn’t on the cards quite just yet, with further upcoming events.
“My mailbag was great after the Tour de France. It’s been exceptional during this week on the road events.
“All the people writing to me from Australia, they all say the same thing: ‘don’t ever think of retiring’.
“But hey, I’m not invincible and I don’t want to, as I say, bore everybody.
“I shall miss it desperately.”
