Because of those streaming options there is a huge number of people tucking up under the doona with their mobile phone watching the overnight action.

Either that, or they’re streaming what they want when they wake up, and according to some of Australia’s biggest telcos – and the data proves it.

Telstra reported spikes in network activity early in the morning last week with the hours of 4-8am showing an eight per cent spike compared to the regular baseline.

To quantify that, it’s like we watched Ariarne Titmus swim her 400m Freestyle over 2.9 million times!

The three biggest moments on the Telstra network were a 20 per cent spike in activity on August 1 to see Jess Fox win Gold, Kyle Chalmers win Silver and the Matildas being knocked out in the pool stage.

Next biggest was on July 30th with a 19 per cent spike at 5.45am to see Mollie O’Callaghan and Ariarne Titmus battle for the Gold Medal in the 200m Freestyle.

On August 2nd there was a 11.9 per cent spike when the Women’s 4 x 200m Freestyle relay team won the Gold!

NBN provider Aussie Broadband saw a lift in peak traffic from 5Gbps to 21.6Gbps for streaming services Stan and 9Now.

Seeing the week before the Olympics alongside the first few days of the games you can see a stark lift in the usage of both streaming services.
