The Albanese government is set for a showdown with the troubled construction wing of the CFMEU in a bid to reform the union.

After delays in the courts, Labor will use the return of parliament to legislate changes.

The Fair Work Commission has applied for an independent administrator to take over the the union’s construction wing.

The union is planning to challenge the application while the government is planning to change the law.

“We’re not prepared to wait for this to wend its way through the courts, with multiple legal challenges,” Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Murray Watt said.

“I don’t think Australians want us to wait for that either.”

The opposition drew the link between construction union problems and the cost of housing and living.

Watt ruled out a Royal Commission into the construction industry.

“I don’t believe we need another royal commission or inquiry into an industry that has been inquired to death,” Watt said.
