An unseasonable deluge inundating Queensland has forced organisers to postpone the Ekka’s annual Grand Parade.

The event has been moved to Saturday after downpours closed two rides – The Beast and The Giant Slide – and cancelled displays today.

But Queensland’s Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association chief executive Brendan Christou said he still expected about 40,000 patrons to pour through the Brisbane Showground gates today.

“There’s a much better weather forecast (on Saturday),” he told The Courier Mail.

“The reason for that is it will chop up the arena, which will make it not so great for the show jumping and a bit dangerous for the next few days.”

Christou said there’s still a spirit around the public holiday despite it being the wettest People’s Day in memory.

“The upside is there’s lots of weather across the state, and our farmers will think thank God’s for that. But we look forward to the next, dry, four days,” he said.

The Grand Parade is one of the Ekka’s most highly anticipated events held on the People’s Day public holiday.

The parade showcases more than 500 animals and champions including dairy cattle, dogs and more.
