On Sunday Bay of Fires young stars Imi Mbedla, & Ava Caryofyllis are nominated for the Graham Kennedy New Talent Logie Award.
In a tough battle they compete with Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart), Felix Cameron (Boy Swallows Universe), Lee Tiger Halley (Boy Swallows Universe) and Tristan Gorey (Home and Away).
Marta Dusseldorp recently told TV Tonight how she hunted far and wide for the perfect combination of young performers.
“They took my heart from the very first test,” she said.
“It’s that interesting thing that happens when you get those hideous online tests, because everyone’s self tests now because of covid. Now it’s the norm, and then you get face to face.
“Whereas in my day, it was always face to face straight up. I think it’s a much quicker process because you are in the room with them.
“Needless to say, I think we found the perfect children.
“They were extensions of Stella, as my children are of me …who you should be, who you want to be, where your love lies.”
Dusseldorp particularly loved how writers Max Dann and Andrew Knight wrote Otis as Stella’s very own sounding board, but with a harsh young edge.
“It was lovely when he goes ‘You get some shit at work, and I lose my entire life? Like, f*** you!’” she recalls.
“I loved that moment where the mother was left with no sympathy, I suppose, from the thing that she loved the most.”
She added, “They’ve got great stories in season two, and we get up to all sorts of mischief.”
