Riders were stuck on a rollercoaster at Sea World on the Gold Coast for up to an hour after the ride malfunctioned.

The ‘Leviathan’ roller coaster stopped mid-ride about 2pm due to a “ride sensor activation” error, according to the company.

Riders were left waiting for up to an hour in their seats before staff from the amusement park helped them disembark from the emergency access points.

Staff first tried to fix the stoppage using the controls of the ride, before resorting to evacuating the passengers.

9News understands there were approximately 20 passengers on board the ride when it stopped.

The rollercoaster can take a maximum of 24 passengers on each ride.

From when the stoppage was first reported, it took half an hour before passengers started disembarking.

Two people at a time were harnessed up and led off the ride by the stairs.

It took an hour for the last passengers to leave the ride.

”At all times throughout the stoppage, the guests were safe and our team were in constant communication with them,” Sea World said in a statement.

“The guests on board exited the ride from the safe stop zones with the help of our team.

“The safety and wellbeing of our guests is our highest priority and ride stoppages are proof rides systems and operators are doing as they are designed and trained to do to keep our guests safe.”

The popular roller coaster is constructed from wood and is only two years old.
