Lisa Millar today departed News Breakfast after six years with the ABC show and five as co-host.

“What a massive privilege it has been to work with you all,” she said. “I’ve kept the tears at bay, but now they’re coming, because it is just extraordinary. The audience as well, you have been so wonderful. I kept telling myself, ‘It’s just a job. I’m just leaving a job’ but I realise it’s so much more than that.

“I want to thank you all for joining us every morning, but I couldn’t do this without all of these people!”

She added, “I think that’s the thing about this program, isn’t it? You could be interviewing Prime Ministers on one day, and Elmo and Big Bird the next. But what is a constant is the support and warmth and love from the team that come in here every morning with me and sit there on the couch.”

Earlier the show also featured David Anderson for an interview about his planned exit.

“Talk about trying to upstage me. Managing Director David Anderson, good morning to you,” Millar said.

“Of course I have to say thank you so much for everything you’ve done for the ABC,” he said.

“Your role on News Breakfast, you will be missed.

“(It’s) wonderful that Bridget Brennan is coming in, but we do wish you all the best. You go with our thanks.

“The nation loves you, so I’m glad you’re staying on with the ABC and we’ll see you on with other programs.”

ABC has confirmed Bridget Brennan as the new co-host joining Michael Rowland.
