Q+A is broadcasting from Sydney on Monday.

This week on Q+A … Is democracy in crisis?

Popularism is on the rise globally. Disaffection among inflation-hit workers is growing. Younger Australians – angry about the housing market, anxious about climate change – are lost to algorithms.

Democrats say Donald Trump is a threat to democracy – Republicans say the same of Kamala Harris. Far-right groups are rioting in the UK just months after a landside centre-left Labour election win. “The very soul of Europe is at risk”, some warn, as Ukraine fights on. Autocrats in Russia and China are determined to expand their power. Support for Australian major parties is in long-term decline, with debate over Gaza and immigration challenging community cohesion like never before.

Can the centre still hold? What can leaders do to strengthen democracy and win back our attention and trust?

Panellists:
Minister for Youth, Anne Aly,
Liberal MP for Menzies Keith Wolahan,
National Security College Professor George Brandis,
Writer Roxane Gay
and British academic and podcaster, David Runciman
