The Host City of the 69th Eurovision Song Contest is to be announced later this week.
Swiss broadcaster has narrowed the field to either Basel or Geneva with the event set for May 2025.
Basel is considered the cultural capital of Switzerland, home to many museums and a population of 575,000. Geneva is a worldwide centre for diplomacy with a population of 639,000,
Neither has hostd before although Switzerland was home to the very first event in Lugano.
Interested cities had until the end of June to submit their bids to SRG on the basis of an extensive catalogue of requirements.
Key to the assessment of the bids submitted were criteria such as arena concept, public transport links, sustainability, available hotel accommodation, security and waste disposal concepts, investment, event experience, and support and motivation from the city as a whole, as well as many other factors.
Bids by Zurich and Berne/Biel were knocked out of consideration.
This year’s event in Malmö was won by Nemo’s with The Code.
SBS is yet to confirm if Australia remains a future entrant after the guaranteed inclusion by the European Broadcasting Union expired in 2023.
