Media Watch last night weighed into the speculation about the unexpected resignation of ABC Managing Director David Anderson.

It added fuel to the media fire that Anderson’s departure is linked to changes in the ABC Chair.

“David Anderson’s resignation after a career that started in the post room 35 years ago is no great surprise. Even though he had four years left on his contract,” host Paul Barry said.

“Running the ABC and defending it against attack, from friend and foe, is a relentless, high-pressure job that has taken its toll.

“And it’s no surprise if he wants his life back.

“But Anderson is also a casualty of Kim Williams’ crusade to restore the ABC to its former glory, with the new chair calling publicly for a harder approach to news and digital content, more Australian drama and arts, revitalising radio, and for the ABC to ‘rediscover its corporate purpose’, which is to offer national leadership and excellence.”

It follows Williams’ calling publicly for a harder approach to news and digital content, more Australian drama and arts, revitalising radio, and for the ABC to ‘rediscover its corporate purpose.’

Barry observed, “My understanding is Anderson did walk and wasn’t pushed. But it’s not quite as simple as that. Most of what Williams is criticising happened on Anderson’s watch.”

Last week Anderson denied his departure was linked to changes at the top of the ABC Board saying people will seek to see a story and draw a conclusion.

“We are 100% aligned on the organisation, what it needs to be, what it needs to do for the Australian people. And he’s actually quite delightful to work with. We really enjoy each other’s company, and we’ve spent a lot of time together. And if anything, Kim being there is one of those reasons that you want to stay on. But that can’t be the only reason,” he told ABC Radio National.

“I find Kim to be delightful, and I’ll continue to say that. I think he will be terrific and go on to be terrific as Chair for the ABC.”

Barry, who is also outgoing from another chair, is convinced Williams will get his way in running the broadcaster.

“And even if he says he won’t take on the MD’s job — and let’s not forget David Hill made that switch 37 years ago — he will be the power, especially now.”
