Fire crews say they are “beginning to gain the upper hand” on a fire burning at emergency-level in Sydney’s south-west – as a second fire escalates nearby.

At least 80 firefighters are tackling the fire, which is burning along Camden Valley Way near Horningsea Park and Edmondson Park in Liverpool.

The fire is becoming contained to the western side of Winburg Drive and Diamond Hill Circut in Edmonson Park, the RFS said.

It is still considered to be burning out of control and has already ripped through 12 hectares of grass.

Residents are in danger and should seek shelter immediately, officials warned.

The fire started at the intersection of Camden Valley Way and Cowpasture Road just before 2pm, and quickly spread towards homes

It is too late for residents in Talarna Hill Drive to Jardine Drive to leave, the RFS said.

Camden Valley Way and Bringelly Road are now closed between Corfield Road at Prestons and Cowpasture Road at Leppington.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use an alternative route and are being warned smoke could affect visibility.

Trains are not running between Glenfield and Leppington on the T2 Inner West & Leppington Line.

Replacement buses have been organised, but are not yet on site.

Embers will be blown long distances away from the main fire, the RFS warned.

Waterbombing aircraft are trying and slow the spread of the fire.

Temperatures in Sydney this afternoon hit 28C amid a late winter heatwave.

Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 100km/h in the great dividing range and far western Sydney later tonight.

The fire has already swallowed up a fairground, burning through equipment, including a teacup ride according to video footage.

Meanwhile, a second fire is burning out of control near Richardson Road in Spring Farm near Camden and is heading towards the Mount Annan Gardens.

It is at a Watch and Act level.

Residents near there should monitor the conditions and prepare to evacuate.

Multiple more fires burning around Sydney

There are also two more fires burning at advice level nearby, at Bringelly Road in Leppington, and Campbelltown Road in Bardia.

Meanwhile, further south of Sydney in the Illawarra the M1 Princess Motorway is closed in both directions between Dapto and Berkeley due to a fire.

Motorists should avoid the area and use detours via Northcliffe Drive at Berkeley and Five Islands Road exit at Unanderra.
