Police are searching for a man who stole a police car while officers were responding to an incident in the rural New South Wales town of Narromine.

Emergency services were called to an unidentified car on ablaze on a train line on Craigie Lea Road about 3.10pm yesterday. 

Firefighters extinguished the fire while officers conducted inquiries at the scene.

Police said that, during the commotion, a man stole and took off with a marked police car – a 4WD Mitsubishi Pajero.

“The vehicle was last seen on McGrane Way, Narromine,” police said.

The man is described as being aged in his late teens, white, about 175cm tall with a medium build and brown hair.

Police are searching the small town for their car and have widened their search to surrounding areas.
