A man is recovering from stab wounds after he was attacked while confronting someone breaking into houses in a small town in South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula.

In an unusual twist, it’s understood his attacker’s life was once saved by members of the community he’s accused of trying to steal from.

Mike Regnier was taken to hospital with stab wounds, with the 62-year-old’s distraught partner revealing to 9News that he had bravely approached his alleged attacker who was breaking into a neighbour’s house.

9News understands the man he confronted had been saved from a burning car by members of the same community just last year.

“I think if it wasn’t for an alibi pulling him out I don’t think he’d be here today,” a witness said following last September’s car blaze.

Regnier’s injuries are not life-threatening.
