The PlayStation 5 Pro has been officially unveiled by Sony, offering a major performance boost for current-generation games and the future.

PlayStation hardware lead Mark Cerny introduced the upgraded console in a presentation early this morning, highlighting a big leap forward for the gaming giants.

“Simply put, it’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” he said.

PlayStation’s upgraded console may be bigger and better than before, but it’s not going to be for everyone – the price alone will make eyes water.

How does the PlayStation 5 Pro compare to the current model?

It’s reportedly a little larger than the PS5 Slim model and offers a slightly revamped design.

The major changes are internal.

During the announcement, Cerny highlighted “The Big Three” when detailing the console: Larger GPU, Advanced Ray Tracing and AI-driven Upscaling.

PlayStation says the PS5 Pro has 67 per cent more Compute Units than the current gen PS5 model. It also offers 28 per cent faster memory and up to 45 per cent faster rendering for gameplay.

The PS5 Pro also features Advanced Raytracing. Cerny says this allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.

The console boasts AI-driven upscaling. Using PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the PS5 Pro uses machine learning technology to bring sharper images and detail to games.

It also features a 2TB SSD, a much needed addition given the console won’t come with a disc drive.

The main takeaway is PS5 Pro users will no longer need to choose between Fidelity and Performance modes while gaming.

What games are getting a boost on the PS5 Pro?

There’s an expanding list of titles labeled “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, including:

Alan Wake 2Assassin’s Creed: ShadowsDemon’s SoulsDragon’s Dogma 2Final Fantasy 7 RebirthGran Turismo 7Hogwarts LegacyHorizon Forbidden WestMarvel’s Spider-Man 2Ratchet & Clank: Rift ApartThe Crew MotorfestThe First DescendantThe Last of Us Part II Remastered

More titles are to be announced.

That said, pretty much everything will look better with thanks to the AI Upscaling technology. Astro’s Playroom will, again, come pre-installed on the console.
