Two people are feared dead after a car veered off a road and into a creek near the NSW-Queensland north-west border overnight.

Emergency services were called to Carwal Creek Bridge, south of the Mungindi township, after an SUV crashed down an embankment and landed in the creek becoming submerged about 1.15am.

Friends found the SUV down an embankment after they circled back, realising it had stopped following them.

The group along with a local property owner helped rescue a woman, believed to be in her 20s, out of the car.

The two remaining people, believed to be a man and a second woman, were unable to be rescued.

The injured woman was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Emergency services remain at the scene and will continue searching for the remaining missing people.

Police divers and crash investigators are on their way to the scene.

Morialta Road remains closed in both directions.
