The safety of Australia’s backyard is the top priority for Anthony Albanese during the PM’s visit to the US for the all-important Quad summit meeting.

Albanese was hosted by US President Joe Biden at his home in Delaware before meeting with leaders of the Quad alliance: Australia, the United States, Japan and India.

This week’s meeting is the final chance for Biden to shore up the alliance for future administrations and the president made it clear it was a priority as his time in power comes to a close.

“The Quad is here to stay,” Biden said during his remarks at the summit.

Albanese said during his speech the Quad was a fundamental part of Australia’s global strength.

“For Australia, the Quad is a key instrument to promote stability in our region. A stronger Quad means a stronger Australia,” he said.

“Together, our four nations are committed to an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific, and we have a shared vision for a region that is governed by accepted rules and norms where all countries can co-operate, trade and thrive.”

A key concern during the meeting was China’s aggressiveness in the South China sea.

Discussions behind closed doors at the summit are expected to focus on how to counter China gathering support in the Indo-Pacific region.

Albanese said the summit would also discuss clean energy, health security, critical and emerging technologies, cyber resilience, infrastructure, space, maritime security and counter-terrorism.

“Our collective actions through the Quad continue to respond to the Indo-Pacific’s priorities and needs, and align with our shared vision for the region,” Albanese said in his remarks.

This year’s meeting is Biden’s final as the US election in November draws closer.

The 2025 Quad Leaders’ Summit will be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India.
