The Australian Communications and Media Authority are seeking public feedback on how to bring in and oversee a new TV prominence framework.

This follows lengthy industry consulation on ensuring Australians can easily find and access free-to-air television services on new smart televisions.

“From January 2026, all connected TV devices sold in Australia must comply with new TV prominence rules. These are designed to make it easier for Australians to access free-to-air services and apps on their smart TVs and devices,” ACMA states.

“We have new powers to help bring in and oversee the TV prominence framework. This may involve determining:

which devices must comply with the minimum prominence requirements
where on the user interface (the home screen, landing page or similar) the rules must be met
how TV services will be deemed to have been ‘offered’ for installation on devices.

“Our consultation paper outlines our initial views. We would also like to gather evidence about the treatment of apps on smart TVs.

“Your submissions will help us decide how we will use our new powers ahead of the framework’s commencement.”

Consultation closes 15 Oct 2024
