Six part series National Parks from Above will screen on SBS from Thursday.

Across the world, countries have turned some of their most incredible areas of natural beauty into National Parks, preserving them for generations to come. From the frozen expanse of Iceland’s Vatnajökull ice cap to the steep limestone gorges of the Cévennes in southern France, this series will explore these areas by not only taking a cinematic journey from above, but also by swooping down closer to the ground to meet the people who use these landscapes every day, discovering the often-extreme jobs they undertake and the unique lives they lead.

Episode One: Scotland
The Cairngorms National Park in Scotland is a rugged expanse of mountains, ancient forests and atmospheric lochs, where a vibrant local community ensures their heritage is preserved and celebrated. Soaring through the glens, we meet the Lonach Highlanders marching to greet a special royal guest; swooping down to the Abernethy Nature Reserve we join a pair working to reverse deforestation by taking on the role of predator; and gliding over the pure waters of the River Spey we find out why Scotch is the world’s favourite whisky, uncovering the extraordinary history behind this global brand more than five hundred years in the making.

Thursday, 26 September at 8.25pm on SBS.
