My Kitchen Rules last night unleashed its latest twist, sending home two teams in an MKR first, then introducing three gatecrashers.

Townsville brother and sister Danny and Sonia and South Australia mothers Ash and Cassie were eliminated from the competition.

Brothers Rob and Liam were advanced straight to Kitchen HQ leaving remaining teams Simone and Viviana, Hannah and Lawrence, and Mike and Pete to battle the new gatecrashers as follows:

Mother-daughter duo Janey and Maddie are always on point, and they hope their food will be as high-end as they are. These glamorous city gals enjoy the finer things in life, like oysters and champagne. Janey wouldn’t be caught out without a blow-dry, lippy and good pair of heels, and can’t fathom why one would wear trackpants to the supermarket. “Looking your best and being your best” is her life motto, and the same goes for her food – only the best for her guests! Millennial Maddie is health conscious and super trendy, loving designer brands like her mother. With Maddie leaving behind a career in marketing and Janey having over 30 years of experience in recruitment, the pair have started their own small recruitment business and really know how to work together as a team.

What is your signature dish and what makes it so special to you?
Janey: Roast chicken with all the trimmings is always a family favourite and lovely to serve on a platter. I serve it with cauliflower gratin, roasted vegetables, creamed spinach, and a generous amount of chicken jus; it’s a classic in our home.

Maddie: I love cooking Asian salmon and roast chicken with vegetables. For dessert, I really enjoy making raspberry souffle-something Mum taught me to make. They are light to eat at the end of a meal and always look impressive!

What does cooking and food mean to you?
Janey: My happy place is in the kitchen. Food is love and sharing and I just love making food for others to enjoy. I am never unhappy cooking; it just brings me joy.
Maddie: Cooking and food bring me so much joy! Whether I’m learning a new recipe, cooking for my friends and family, or trying a new restaurant, I have always loved trying new foods, and I love how food brings people together.

Mother & Son -NSW

Caz and Fergus aren’t your average mother-and-son pair. They enjoy bonding over a glass of wine and teasing each other relentlessly. Fergus is a musician and his mum is his biggest fan. With Caz’s cooking skills and Fergus’ love for performing, this is sure to be dinner and a show! Fergus (aka Fergus James) is a solo singer/songwriter who has opened for global superstar Ed Sheeran, played music festival Splendour in the Grass and released a substantial catalogue of his own music. When he’s not singing on stage, he’s singing in the kitchen. Caz works in education and loves to travel, read, play golf, and grow fruit and vegetables. Now that her kids have flown the nest, she lives in Tasmania and dreams of applying her skills and knowledge to open a casual food venue focusing on local producers and featuring music played by Fergus. Living in rural NSW for most of their lives, Caz and Fergus have a paddock-to-plate approach to cooking.

How would you describe yourself as a cook?
Caz: Pretty relaxed.
Fergus: Experimental, diverse, inexperienced but eager to learn.

Can you remember the first dish you ever prepared?
Caz: Chocolate mousse from The Australian Women’s Weekly cooking class cookbook. Fergus: I always made beef hamburgers (which we called Ferg Burgers in our family) for my family.

What is your signature dish and what makes it so special to you?
Caz: Eye fillet of beef with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, baby carrots, shaved Brussels sprouts, and a red wine jus. This is the meal that the kids always request when they are home. It’s a shared feast, and we love it.
Fergus: Chickpea and cauliflower yellow curry. It was the first recipe I could replicate from memory and make everything from scratch.

Married Germans – NSW

Married couple Robert and Andrea are eager to be the first German team to win MKR. Dual citizens who have been in Australia since 2006, they share a passion for showcasing the richness of German cuisine and aspire to treat Australia to the exquisite flavours and vibrant dishes from their homeland. Flamboyant and direct, Robert owns his own jewellery business, as well as managing the Oktoberfest Bratwurst stall at a local market. Inspired to promote authentic German flavours, he has become a local favourite, bringing a taste of Germany to the heart of Australia. Andrea, a dedicated clinical nurse in aged care, loves helping people in and out of the kitchen. Her compassionate nature translates into her cooking, creating meals that tantalise tastebuds and nourish the soul. With their unique blend of culinary expertise, cultural pride and formidable determination, Robert and Andrea are ready to make their mark on MKR.

How would you describe your personality?
Robert: Outgoing, open-minded and driven.
Andrea: Caring and very family-orientated.

What is your signature dish and what makes it so special to you?
Robert: Schäufele (a special cut of roast pork done only in our area in Bavaria) with beer sauce, potato dumplings and savoy cabbage.
Andrea: Spaghetti Bolognese, my daughter’s favourite dish.

What are your top tips for stress-free entertaining?
Robert: Preparation and a glass of wine.
Andrea: Prepare as much as you can before your guests arrive.
