The death of a Perth man who collapsed at a gym and spent 15 hours under a cold shower is now being investigated by WorkSafe WA.

Giuliano Pirone, 33, was found unconscious in the bathroom at Culture Fitness 24/7 in Wanneroo after his family reported him missing in August.

Pirone, a bodybuilder, had finished a workout session at the 24-hour gym about 7.30am on August 20 when he collapsed.

He remained there until police found him at 10.30pm that night.

Pirone had suffered a brain injury and was taken to Joondalup Hospital.

He never regained consciousness and was on life support for two weeks before his death.

Health and safety regulator WorkSafe WA confirmed to 9News it is investigating Pirone’s death as it happened at a workplace.

Culture Fitness has staff available for certain periods of the day but it isn’t a legal requirement to have employees at the facility 24/7.

“As a 24-hour gym facility, we remain committed to maintaining a safe, secure and accessible environment for all our members,” a spokesperson said.

Pirone’s family also called for a coronial inquest into his death last month.

“His life should not have ended this way. No way, no way,” his mother Daniela Pirone said.

“I can’t contemplate life without him.”

She added: “I have a shower now and I think of my son, under that shower for 15 hours, cold water running on him and I was just home cooking and if I knew I could’ve done something – I didn’t know anything.”

WA Premier Roger Cook has backed calls for an inquiry.

“He entered a facility, where you would expect a duty of care to be carried out,” Cook said.
