Australians travelling to Bali could spend life behind bars if they’re caught in breach of Indonesia’s new immigration laws.
According to The Bali Sun, foreigners who overstay their visa, breach the conditions of their visa, or break the law, could face jail time – including life in prison.
It comes as Indonesia’s Department of Immigration doubles down on its “zero-tolerance approach” to tourists who violate the country’s immigration laws.

Under the country’s updated immigration policy, offences that were previously punishable by six months to one year in jail will be increased to 20 years or a lifetime.
There will also be an increase in security at immigration checkpoints and additional patrol officers and investigators will be rolled out.
About 125 officers have already been deployed across Bali, including 20 patrol cars and 20 patrol motorcycles as part of Operation Jagratara.
The changes won’t impact travellers who apply for temporary visas and leave within a 30-day period or who have their visa lawfully extended to a 60-day stay.
Immigration breaches have become an increasing issue for authorities, with more than 400 people this year alone deported from Bali.
There have also been cases in the last two years where immigration officials have apprehended dangerous international criminals.
