SBS drama Four Years Later filmed its 8 part drama across both India, in Mumbai and Jaipur and in Australia in Sydney.

Indian-Australian screenwriter Mithila Gupta says filming in both countries was exhilarating, if for different reasons.

“It was such an amazing contrast between the two. In India the industry is so massive, anything is possible. The crew was really massive, and we had really long days. When we were in Jaipur doing all those exteriors, we would kind of say, ‘It’d be great to get up on that rooftop so we could get a bird’s eye view of the city.’ And in two minutes, they would have gone up, spoken to the family, got us access to the rooftop, and we’d be standing there with this giant camera, hoping for the best,” she told TV Tonight.

“Obviously, in Australia, there’s lots more regulations, to deal with. It was equally as fun, just in a different way.”

She continued, “This story resonates for me and hopefully for others. In India, I had crew members coming to me and saying, ‘This happened to me. This is my story. I love it.’ But then the same happened in Australia, from non-Indian people who’ve been here a long time, or a short time. Across the board, all different skin colours, who saw parts of the story and were like, ‘Actually, that happened to me.’

“So it was really great. It kind of made me feel like I belong in both places for the first time.”

Four Years Later double episode 9:20pm Wednesday on SBS.
