The latest doco on a favourite SBS subject is Titanic Revisited, screening this Wednesday.
On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic, the pride of the British White Star Line, began its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. Considered a masterpiece of shipbuilding, it was equipped with the latest navigation technology. The press described it as unsinkable, and yet, on her fourth day at sea, she struck a 500,000 ton iceberg and sank in less than three hours, taking 1500 passengers with her.
More than 110 years later, the question remains: how?
Experts are still attempting to shed light on the events that sealed this liner’s fate, and to determine when the ship reached the point of no return. Was the disaster the result of a navigation error, faulty construction techniques, or a combination? Now, we bring together the world’s leading Titanic experts, including “Mr. Titanic” Paul-Henri Nargeolet in his final interview to investigate every factor involved in the Titanic tragedy. Weather conditions, materials, crucial decisions – will all be put under the microscope to determine how the tragedy could have been averted.
8:25pm Wednesday, 23 October on SBS.
