A northern NSW police officer has been charged after allegedly hitting a teenage boy in the head with a radio while he was being handcuffed.
NSW Police is weighing whether or not to keep the 26-year-old senior constable in his job.
The 17-year-old boy was arrested over an outstanding warrant on June 21 last year near the intersection of Vernon and Duke Street in Coffs Harbour.
But it wasn’t until September 2023 that northern region officers launched an investigation into allegations the boy was assaulted during the arrest.
More than a year later, the police officer was today served with a future court attendance notice for reckless wounding.
He’s due in Coffs Harbour Local Court on December 11, when police will allege he “struck a 17-year-old boy in the head twice with a radio while he was being handcuffed”.
NSW police said the boy’s matter was finalised in Children’s Court.
