In encouraging news amid regional TV stories, WIN Network appointed Sophie Kuryl as WIN’s Tasmania News Director, succeeding Alex Johnston who is moving into a media role within State Politics.
She began her journalism career with the WIN Network more than 15 years ago, spending time in the Launceston newsroom before returning to Hobart where she began producing nightly news bulletins.
Kuryl won the Tasmanian Media Award for Excellence in Legal Reporting in 2015. In 2023, she was appointed State Editor, helping to mentor journalists and supporting the production of local bulletins.
WIN’s Network News Director, Stella Lauri said, “One of the great advantages of being in a local newsroom is the opportunity to develop teams and ensure they have opportunities to grow and progress. Sophie has been with WIN News in Tasmania for more than 15 years and has deep knowledge of the state and its people. This is a well-deserved appointment and I know Sophie will lead with the same dedication she has shown in the past.”
Sophie Kuryl said, “I’m passionate about Tasmania and local news and am incredibly excited to take up the role of Tasmanian News Director. I look forward to leading our dedicated and hard-working team of journalists and camera operators covering the issues that matter to communities across the state.”
