In the smash-hit game show Blankety Blanks which drew extraordinary ratings on 10 from 1977 – 78, a running gag emerged between host Graham Kennedy and panelist Ugly Dave Gray.
Gray’s endless supply of gags would often pivot around a bloke named Dick, which led to Kennedy embellishing the story-telling with ‘Dick-esque’ interjections.
Along with Kennedy’s own ‘Cyril’ gags, it was amazing what the show could get away with in a 7pm family timeslot -even a cheeky reference to a gymnasium owner named ‘Mike Hunt’ (seriously).
Blankety Blanks was later revived by Nine with hosts Daryl Somers (1985-86) and Shane Bourne (1996-97).
