Actor James B. Sikking, best known for Hill Street Blues and Doogie Howser, M.D., has died, aged 90.
He died on Saturday of complications from dementia, his publicist told Variety.
“In a remarkable career, Sikking’s wonderfully exciting face gave us drama, comedy, tragedy and hilarious farse. His career spanned over six decades in television, film and on stage,” she said.
Sikking played Lt. Howard Hunter on the ground-breaking Hill Street Blues from 1981 to 1987, receiving an Emmy nomination for his performance as the clean-cut, pipe-smoking lieutenant.
He later played Dr. David Howser, father of Doogie Howser M.D. (Neil Patrick Harris), on all four seasons of the US medical series from 1989 to 1993.
His other credits included Perry Mason, General Hospital, The Outer Limits, The Fugitive, Rawhide, Bonanza, Ironside, Starsky & Hutch, The Rockford Files, Brooklyn South and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Film credits included Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, The Pelican Brief, Point Blank, Made of Honor, Fever Pitch, Charro!, Final Approach, Ordinary People, Terminal Man and Von Ryan’s Express, Capricorn One, Outland, The Star Chamber and Narrow Margin.
