Thousands of Melburnians will now be able to get food and small household items delivered to their homes via drone.

Food delivery app DoorDash has teamed up with delivery service Wing, launching drone delivery in dozens of suburbs in Melbourne’s east.

It follows a successful rollout of the service in Queensland’s south-east, including Brisbane, Logon and Ipswich.

Wing city manager Dave Ojako-Pettit said drone delivery was one of the fastest ways to deliver goods to people living in highly populated areas.

“It’s very very handy for people who live in the area who are busy working families who don’t necessarily have the time to get out to the store to pick up food items,” he said.

“It’s quick and it takes cars off the road.”

The drones are based out of Eastland Shopping Centre and can carry a load of about 1kg while travelling at 110km/h.

The delivery fees are set by DoorDash and change from order to order but are understood to be cheaper than standard driver drop-offs.

The service is available in the following suburbs: Ringwood, Ringwood North, Mitcham, Nunawading, Donvale, Park Orchards, Warranwood, Croydon Hills, Croydon South, Bayswater, Wantirna, Heathmont, Vermont, and in parts of Vermont South, Forest Hill, Wonga Park, Kilsyth, Warrandyte South, Blackburn, Blackburn North, Doncaster East, Croydon North, Croydon, Bayswater North, Boronia and Wantirna South.
