US President Joe Biden will return to the White House after returning a negative test for COVID-19, his doctor confirmed.

Biden has been isolating at his home in Delaware since testing positive for the virus last week.

It comes just days after he made the unprecedented move to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

In a social media post, Biden’s team confirmed his symptoms had improved.

“The President’s symptoms have resolved. Over the course of his infection, he never manifested a fever, and his vital signs remained normal, to include pulse oximetry. His lungs remained clear,” Physician Dr Kevin O’Connor said.

“Binax rapid antigen testing is negative. He will continue to be monitored for any recurrence of illness.

“The President continues to perform all of his presidential duties.

“As always, I will continue to keep your office updated with any changes in his condition or treatment plan.”

The 81-year-old previously said he felt good after contracting the virus.

He last tested positive for COVID-19 twice in the summer of 2022, when he had a primary case and a rebound case of the virus.

Health officials have reported recent upticks in emergency room visits and hospitalisations from COVID-19.

There has also been a pronounced increase in positive test results in much of the country — particularly the southwestern US.
