The goal was to walk underwater for more than 110 metres.

Even for professionals, the sport isn’t for the fainthearted but the Brisbane athlete’s training paid off in the end.

Chris Ellem was thrown into deep end as he made the made the male attempt for the record, stretching three minutes and 40 seconds and smashing the world record by seven metres.

“I only knew about four weeks ago,” Ellem said.

The almost superhuman performances were deserving of a celebration.

“I’m going to have a beer,” Bourke said.
