Beloved Queensland police dog Kaos has died aged 12, just weeks after being decorated for outstanding service to the police force.
Kaos captured Australians’ hearts when he survived a near-fatal stabbing attack while taking down two suspects in Brisbane on February 2, 2020.
The then-seven-year-old German shepherd suffered a 12-centimetre stab wound and was rushed into emergency surgery.

After weeks of rehabilitation, he made a full recovery and returned to patrolling the streets of Brisbane, helping to catch many more suspects before retiring in July 2021.
The men responsible for Kaos’ injuries were charged with serious animal cruelty, among other charges.
Kaos spent his final years at his home with his handler Senior Constable Jim Griffiths and his family in the town of Dayboro.
Kaos died unexpectedly at home on Saturday August 10, Queensland Police said.

The German shepherd was recognised just last month with a Canine Service Medal for outstanding service and bravery during his seven years with the force, helping to apprehend countless offenders.
Queensland Police have paid tribute to the retired veteran in a statement, describing him as “fierce while tracking offenders” but “a sweet and soft soul” when off-duty.
In his retirement, Kaos was a regular at his local cafe in Dayboro, often found lying in the sun and willingly accepting attention from customers.

He also regularly attended the Queensland Children’s Hospital bringing joy, love and cuddles to the sick children.
“PD Kaos and Senior Constable Griffiths were best mates and a formidable team,” the statement reads.
“With honour he served, and it was an honour to serve with him.”
