A manhunt has been launched in Spain over the killing of an 11-year-old boy on a football field.

The victim was playing with other children when he was attacked by a person wearing a hood and wielding a sharp object, the BBC reports.

The attack took place on Sunday morning in Mocejon, near the city of Toledo, in central Spain.

Authorities are searching for the suspect – reported to be a young man aged about 18 -= who fled.

Multiple patrols from the country’s Civil Guard, aided by a helicopter, are involved, local broadcaster RTVE said.

Mocejon mayor Concepción Cedillo said: “It is a sad day, with a town broken by pain, and if every murder is painful, how much more so the murder of an innocent child who was playing football with his friends this morning.”

Crowds gathered outside the town hall for a minute’s silence in tribute to the boy on Sunday afternoon.

Civic leaders in Mocejon are set to declare three days of official mourning, reports local media.
