Motorists are being urged to fill up at the bowser now as already-rising petrol prices are set to spike within days across Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

Although prices are currently falling in these three major cities, they are expected to increase again by the weekend, according to the NRMA.

The NRMA’s Peter Khoury said motorists could be paying a $20 difference for a standard tank.

In Sydney, the average price of regular unleaded petrol is currently 178 cents per litre.

Melbourne is seeing slightly lower prices, with the average at 175 cents per litre, while in Brisbane, the average stands at 199 cents per litre.

“If you’re in Sydney it is already starting to jump but 178 cents in Sydney is better than what’s going to come,” Khoury said.

“We have also seen some better prices in Melbourne and Brisbane because they are at the bottom of their cycles.”

By the weekend, petrol prices are expected to rise above $2 per litre

Motorists who use price tracking apps are more likely to find cheaper petrol, with more than 40 apps available to show current prices.

The ACCC is encouraging all drivers to use these apps to stay informed.
