In his new ABC show Eve of Destruction, host Shaun Micallef asks his guests what they would save if their house was burning.

It’s a question TV Tonight asked the man himself.

“Look, I’d let it all burn,” he reveals.

“I’m not a materialistic person. I don’t regard anything that I own as worth keeping at all. So I would happily say goodbye. It’s all Maya. It’s a material world, I know that, but there’s nothing that I would rescue. In fact, I would be happy for it all to go. It would free me! I would be so much happier… the house itself is a material possession. I’m happy to let that go as well.

So no scripts, papers, documents of any kind?

“No, I don’t want any of that. Mad as Hell was such a disposable show. No-one will watch Mad as Hell ever. It’s all off. It’s all perishable. No, I don’t regard anything I’ve ever written as being worthwhile,” he continues.

“I mean I have had books published, and they hopefully still live on on the shelves of people who were foolish enough to buy them. So they’re not completely lost, but any one offs I have difficulty getting my head around why I would bother with any of it.”

But then it dawns on him…

“Actually there is one thing, there are a couple of things that have been signed by people. There’s a there’s a book by Terry Jones of Python fame, who I interviewed, and he was good enough to sign a copy of one of his books for me. So I do have that,” he concedes.

“Then I’ve got another one from Palin and I’ve got Cleese and both of those two were very happy to sign something. Also Eric Idle signed an album for me. So I’ve got most of the Pythons with separate items. But if you told me that I had to only rescue two of them, I’d be paralysed with indecision, and probably the roof would collapse in on me. So I’d probably have to just let them all go rather than play favourites.”

Shaun Micallef’s Eve of Destruction screens 8pm Wednesdays on ABC.
