The Coastguard was alerted to a “report of concern” on Tuesday and lifeboats and helicopters were deployed in the search alongside other emergency services.

The coastguard said the search was called off later in the evening and she had not been found.

The Hastings family said in a statement Jenny had “struggled with her mental health for a number of years”.

“We know that you all care for us deeply and as soon as we hear any update from the police we will advise you accordingly.”

The family statement added her loss “leaves a gaping hole in all our hearts and hope that she is returned to us safely so that we can celebrate her remarkable life”.

Jenny and Scott Hastings helped promote a campaign in Scotland encouraging people to participate in physical activities to strengthen their mental health.

Scott Hastings earned 65 caps as a centre for Scotland from 1986 to 1997. He was also a member of the British Lions touring team to Australia and New Zealand in 1989 and 1993 respectively.

He played alongside his brother Gavin Hastings, a former Scotland rugby captain.
