Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast has welcomed six new baby koalas to the world.

The sanctuary is celebrating the baby boom by inviting locals to bid on naming rights at a Wildlife Gala next month.

The six joeys, three males and three females, are part of the sanctuary’s breeding conservation efforts and chlamydia vaccine trial.

They have been receiving round-the-clock care from their mothers and wildlife carers, who ensure they receive an ample supply of gum leaves to support their growth.

Koala Conservation Specialist Sarah Eccleston told 9News the young koalas were “the future” and crucial to the protection of the vulnerable species.

Koalas face extinction on the Gold Coast by 2050, a prospect Eccleston is determined to prevent.

“That’s terrifying and that’s not going to happen on my watch,” she said.

All funds raised from the Wildlife Gala event will go towards supporting conservation and hospital programs.
