When was the company founded?
Stranger Than Fiction Films was founded in 2015 to produce only a couple of projects – Jennifer Peedom’s award winning feature documentary, Mountain and the Cannes selected feature documentary and series David Stratton: A Cinematic Life. We had great success with those projects and the company naturally grew as we found great talent and many more exciting stories to tell.

Where are you based and which states did you film in for 22 / 23 / 24 productions?
Stranger Than Fiction Films is based in Sydney but we film across the country and internationally. In 2023 and 2024 we filmed across Australia – Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. We also filmed in New Zealand, United Kingdom, Mexico and Costa Rica.

How many full-time equivalent staff and how many does it expand to during production?
5 full time staff. We expand during production to anywhere between 20-50 crew members depending on the project.

What is your ownership model and who are key principals?
Jennifer Peedom – Co-Founder, Executive Producer and Director
Jo-anne McGowan – Co-Founder and Executive Producer
Sarah Noonan – General Manager

Describe the genres you specialise in for production?
We specialise in unscripted blue-chip Documentary film and television in a myriad of genres including (but not limited to), Social History, Sport, Science & Nature and Performing Arts. In recent years we have been diversifying our slate, developing drama projects based on true stories. We are working with some very skilled and exciting scripted talent and currently have two scripted feature films in active development.

What have been some of your notable credits and with which broadcasters / streamers?
Last year we produced a record number of projects that received festival launches and theatrical releases. Some also received national and international awards and nominations. Last year’s projects included:
– Onefour: Against All Odds, Netflix
– Harley & Katya, ABC and acquired by Netflix. Harley & Katya won an International Emmy in 2023
– The Way We Wore, ABC
– Fungi: Web of Life IMAX, Melbourne International Film Festival, CPH: Dox

We have a number of projects in post-production that we are excited to launch in 2025 including:
– Australia: An Unofficial History, SBS
– Deeper, Theatrical Release
– Butterfly Journey, IMAX release
– Caves IMAX, IMAX release

What’s coming up on your slate and how many projects are in active development?
Five projects, Scripted and Unscripted, are in active development

Do you receive unsolicited material, what are you looking for, how should people pitch projects?
Unfortunately we are not taking unsolicited pitches at this time.
