Michael Coombes has departed Seven Brisbane after 28 years with the network.

A Seven spokesman told The Australian, “After 28 great years with Seven, including the past 18 months as Director of News for Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Michael Coombes leaves with our sincere thanks and the very best wishes for the future.”

He took leave from September 6 but on Friday he wrote to staff, “Officially, I finish up on October 31. But, thankfully, I have a staggering leave balance and will remain on leave until then,’ he told Seven staffers in the email.

“I am sure there will be speculation, but I want you all to know that, despite what you may read, my decision is in no way connected with any negative inferences which may be thrown about. Quite simply, it’s time.”

The newsroom of late has seen the departure of Sharyn Ghidella (given notice by Coombes) and weatherman Paul Burt.

Interstate news directors Shaun Menegola (Melbourne) and Neil Warren (Sydney) have also gone.

Coombes successor is yet to announced. Daily Mail reports Seven’s Perth news director Ray Kuka jetted into Brisbane on Tuesday.

Courier Mail speculates on overtures to 10 News First Brissy boss Erin Edwards, who just lured Sharyn Ghidella to the network, as well as 7News Spotlight reporter Sarah Greenhalgh.

Such turmoil just weeks out from the Queensland state election…
