An exclusion zone has been put in place in Brisbane’s south after a fire broke out this afternoon.

Thick smoke began billowing over streets surrounding a building on Hubert Street in Woolloongabba that became ablaze about 4.30pm.

Police declared an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act with an exclusion zone in place on Gibbon Street, Stanley Street, Raid Street and Hawthorne Street.

Dozens of emergency crews are at the scene.

Conditions are windy, fanning thick plumes of smoke.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area, and those within the exclusion zone were asked to remain indoors.

The roof of the building caved in as firefighters fought to control the blaze.

9News understands that multiple businesses including a wedding and events venue have been affected.

One person was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with life-threatening airway burns.

Paramedics remain on the scene.
