Sports presenter Tony Armstrong departed News Breakfast this morning, to embark on new opportunities in media.
Armstrong has been confirmed to feature in a new ABC show for 2025, but it isn’t clear if he has signed a new ABC contract or is poised for commercial success elsewhere.
Today it was all about acknowledging his work over three years and a dizzying rise from newcomer to Gold Logie nominee.
Armstrong was grateful for the support of colleagues and audience.
“We’re just the lucky presenters who get to go out there and I guess, present all of the hard work… it takes a village. We do it understaffed, under resourced, and every day, everyone rocks up with a smile on their face, doing the work ofr four or five people. I’m just an instrument that’s part of a team and what a team it’s been – from Justin, Tyson, the whole way down the list. It’s been a thrill,” he said.
“I’ll never forget my first day. I had an assistant producing. When you’re in the sports desk, you actually have to write your own stories and edit your own footage. I can’t read or write or edit, so that’s a big issue. I had help for the first day, and then the next day it was like, ‘You’re on your own.’ The help that I got over and over again from everyone was amazing, and it still is to this day. I’m gonna miss everyone.”
His farewell comes in the week that Media Watch noted a voice-over gig was not flagged with ABC management. Armstrong commented, “It’s been a funny old week. But yeah, people have been really, really nice to me.”
“I’m going to miss the News Breakfast family. And as we all know, Steph, and Michael, you guys know — it is more than just the people out here,” he said.
“We’ve got a bunch of producers and everyone, directors, people on autocue, who are doing the work of four or five people. And everyone does it so well.”
